Could Revisiting the Imperial Household Law Help Shape Japan’s Future?
As investors, we often look beyond short-term market movements and focus on the long-term foundations that drive a nation’s growth.
Japan has a unique history. In the past, eight women served as Empress regnant, demonstrating that flexibility has also been part of Japan’s historical tradition. By drawing on this heritage while adapting to the realities of the modern world, Japan has an opportunity to build an “open tradition” that future generations can be proud of.
In my view, if the Imperial Family continues to be seen as a symbol of continuity while embracing the changing times, it could strengthen confidence in Japan’s long-term potential. Although many factors influence a country’s economy and financial markets, such a development could also contribute to more positive perceptions of Japan, the yen, and the Japanese market.
At the same time, I believe it is important that any discussion about the Imperial Household Law be conducted openly and thoroughly. As things stand, there are concerns that the current male-only succession rules could be maintained without sufficient public discussion.

This is simply my personal perspective as a private investor. I believe the discussion surrounding the Imperial Household Law is meaningful when considering Japan’s future.
